SUPPORT CYSTIC FIBROSIS
TETON DAM RACES

“Adding tomorrows every day expresses the mission—and results—of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s steadfast efforts to extend the length and quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis (CF). CF presents daily challenges for approximately 30,000 Americans. But life with the disease is far different today than it was 50, 30, or even 10 years ago.

Perhaps the best evidence to prove that those with cystic fibrosis are living longer is the fact that more than 40 percent of the CF patient population is now age 18 or older. Recently developed therapies and specialized care have enabled people with CF to gain greater control over their disease. So children and adults are not only living longer, but also living a better quality of life.”

The Teton Dam Marathon and Events is donating to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF) this year with a goal of raising $6,000. Each participant in the 2008 Teton Dam Races will play a part in rasing this money; a portion of each entry fee will be donated to CFF.

In our efforts to support this cause, we are honored to recognize Joyce Harbrecht, a Utah resident. Joyce and her family have had a long history with both the Teton Dam Flood and cystic fibrosis (CF). Her great-grandfather, who was a judge here in Rexburg, lost his farm in the Teton Dam Flood. For CF, she has been aiding in the research of the disease for many years and has first hand experience.

Joyce had 12 children, in which 5 were born with CF. Being an inherited chronic disease, CF usually kills those who have it during childhood. As research and treatment advances, miracles are happening everyday in the lives of those who are struggling. Out of Joyce’s 5 children who had the disease two are still living at this time and represent some of the oldest survivors of CF so far.

We wish to honor Joyce and her service to CF research throughout her life. Her family was one of the first to take part in the research of this disease. She and her family aided in the discovery of how this disease is passed on and in experimental tests to determine if one has the disease. Joyce herself was one of the founders of a foundation for grieving the families of those who have CF. She and her family continue to give their all for the research of this disease.

As a thank you for all the hard work given by great people like Joyce to make cystic fibrosis a thing of the past, feel free to aid in her efforts by donating to the Teton Dam Marathon Cystic Fibrosis Fund.
